The Switch versions are absolutely the same updated versions that were released on the PS4 and Xbox One and they look great. It would have been so easy for 4A Games to get around some of the challenges of moving games to the Switch by porting the original versions of them instead of the remasters but they didn't take that route. Both Metro 2033, and its sequel Metro: Last Light are here but not in their original forms. Metro Redux is made up of two different games. They've accomplished that, and while the Switch version of Metro Redux isn't perfect, it’s one of the best ports I've played on the system. These developers clearly care about their games and they wanted to make sure Switch gamers would get to play a version of them that is worth their time. Playing the Switch version, you quickly realize that this was a labor of love. Developer 4A Games, the team who have made all of the Metro titles, handled the Switch version in house instead of farming it out and they gave it all the love and care it needed. Instead, we have a bit of a miracle here.
Terrible graphics, poor controls, an awful framerate, I could see the issues coming a mile away. There were so many ways this could have gone wrong.
It was a few years removed from its original release as well, meaning it would get judged less harshly against other versions. It's a port of a current-generation title that was a remaster of a past generation title. When I first heard Metro Redux was coming to the Switch, I was afraid it was going to be one of those poorly optimized ports. When we're talking games from current consoles, the Switch version will usually be the weakest, but Switch players still have the right to expect developers to get all they can out of their system. While some have been handled with care, too many others have been rushed out the door, poorly optimized for the Switch, with developers seemingly caring more about the port being cheap and easy than it is good. There's been a downside to all of these ports, though. In theory, this should be great for Switch owners because while these may not be brand new games, there's no way any of us played all of them on their original platforms and having more options on the go can be great. It's an easy way to get more games on the system and a quick port is cheap enough that developers aren't risking much in the process. As the Switch has grown in popularity, there's been a huge rush to port seemingly every game in recent history to it.
